Hotel Gotham
The five-star fire station for brides who’ve cancelled the hen and want a treat instead.
The Rex is for the bride who wants Newcastle, but categorically does not want a hen weekend. The city’s former fire and police station has been turned into something gloriously theatrical: marble bathrooms, brass details, deep colours and enough 1930s drama to make a standard city hotel feel deeply underdressed.
There are proper Club Twin rooms for friends sharing, while the bigger suites add roll-top baths, sofas and access to the hotel’s private club spaces. The bedrooms are polished rather than practical group crash pads, so this is much more “two nights away with the bridesmaids” than twelve people taking over a corridor.
Downstairs, dinner and cocktails mean the weekend can start before anyone has even decided where to go next. Just remember that the property’s current policy explicitly says no hen parties, so this belongs firmly in the genuine bridesmaids-weekend category rather than the “quiet hen” category.
The hotel sits on Pilgrim Street, opposite the Theatre Royal end of town and within an easy walk of Grey Street, Monument and the Bigg Market. Central Station is close enough that staggered arrivals should not require a search party, while the Quayside is downhill when dinner turns into drinks. You are properly in the middle of Newcastle here, which is excellent for a bridesmaids’ city break and slightly less excellent if anyone was hoping the hotel would feel remotely removed from Saturday-night Newcastle.
Features
Check-in is from 3pm and check-out is by 11am. There are no extra beds. Most importantly, the property currently states that it will not accommodate hen, stag or similar parties. This is not one to book for a “quiet hen” and hope nobody notices. Parking is offsite rather than a large hotel car park.

I stayed solo in a Gotham Suite which itself was great, featuring a wonderfully large bath.
Great weekend stay.
The lady on reception was very polite and check in was a breeze.
