Northern hospitality meets cosmopolitan cool in the city that brought us the Geordie Shore. From Newcastle’s famous Quayside bars to the buzzing venues of the Diamond Strip, there’s no city better for the bride who just wants a good old-fashioned p*ss up without the pretense.
PLAN MY NEWCASTLE HEN
Newcastle works because the people genuinely want you to have a good time. It has that rare mix of proper nightlife and locals who’ll happily adopt your hen party for the evening. The compact centre makes it easy to move from stylish Quayside bars to the buzz of the Diamond Strip, while the whole city has an effortless, no-faff energy. Add great value and seriously good nights out, and Newcastle becomes one of those places where everyone feels like your friend by the end of the night.
WHERE TO STAY
Newcastle’s city centre — particularly the Quayside — is ideal for group hotels with river views and easy access to the nightlife. The centre is compact enough that almost anywhere central puts you within walking distance of the main bars, restaurants and clubs. Book early enough and, yes, you can even stay in the actual Geordie Shore house.
THINGS TO DO
Newcastle does big weekends properly. Think bottomless brunches, cocktail classes, rooftop drinks and activities that get everyone involved before heading straight into a night out. It’s fun, unfussy and very good at turning a loose plan into an entire day.
BRUNCH
A long lunch, plenty of drinks and a very sensible way to get Saturday started.
TASTING
Very Scottish, considerably more sophisticated than shots, and actually worth remembering the next morning.
COCKTAILS
Shake, stir and make something considerably better than whatever you normally order at the bar.
EXPERIENCE
A little culture between cocktails, because apparently we’re capable of doing both.
NIGHT OUT
Start somewhere polished, finish somewhere considerably less organised. Exactly as it should be.
DRINKS
Tiny doors, very good cocktails and at least one bar somebody will insist they discovered first.
EAT + DRINK
Newcastle is very good at making “one drink” completely unrealistic. Start with somewhere worth booking around the Quayside, move on to cocktails in the city centre, then follow the crowd wherever the night goes next. These are the places we’d send straight to the group chat.
