Moxy York
Cocktails at check-in and The Shambles down the road: this is the hen weekend hotel for the group that would rather meet at the bar than reception.
Moxy York is for the group that would rather meet at a bar than hover around reception pretending not to be in the way. Check-in happens at Bar Moxy, there are sofas, games and enough communal space for everyone to gather without colonising somebody’s bedroom.
Upstairs, the rooms are compact and unapologetically practical. Twin Sleepers give two friends actual separate beds, while the larger Family Sleeper adds a pull-out sofa and a little more breathing room. Storage is clever rather than generous, so this is not the weekend for bringing six “just in case” outfits each.
The real selling point is how easy it all feels. Drinks downstairs, 24-hour snacks when dinner was somehow four hours ago, and The Shambles a few minutes away. It’s lively without requiring the hotel itself to become the entire night out.
Moxy sits on Black Horse Lane, just inside the city walls and a few minutes from The Shambles, with York Minster, Fossgate and the centre all easy on foot. York station is around fifteen minutes away, so the late arrival can still find you without a rescue mission. The immediate area is central without being quite as full-on as Micklegate on a Saturday night. Once you’ve checked in, dinner, drinks and most of the weekend require very little transport planning.
Features
Check-in is from 3pm and check-out is by noon. Bedrooms are deliberately compact, with wall-mounted hanging space rather than giant wardrobes. There’s no onsite parking, although Q-Park Shambles is nearby. Every floor has an ironing room, which becomes unexpectedly valuable when someone unveils a dress that has spent the journey folded into a tote bag.
REVIEWS
We met friends for a weekend in York and they had previously stayed at The Moxy.
Comfortable beds, clean rooms, we had a view of York minster which was great.
The Bar / Restaurant area was lively and had a great atmosphere.
The biggest drawback being the poor design of the rooms which lack drawers, wardrobe, safe or dressing table.
