The Alan

A rare Manchester hotel that makes four-to-a-room actually work: two (good sized) double beds, better cocktails and Chinatown on the doorstep.

VibeDesign-led

The Alan is one for groups who want good design without paying purely for the privilege of looking at it. Set across six floors in a restored city-centre building, its interiors mix exposed brick, high ceilings, reclaimed materials and a slightly industrial finish that feels considered rather than over-styled.

The big practical win is the Classic Double Double: two actual double beds sleeping up to four, rather than an optimistic sofa bed being asked to carry the entire weekend. The hotel itself positions the room for groups heading out to celebrate, which feels refreshingly on-message.

There is enough communal space downstairs for regrouping over a drink, breakfast the next morning and waiting for the final person to locate her room key. Add a very walkable Princess Street location and The Alan makes a particularly sensible base for a group that wants central Manchester without defaulting to a generic chain hotel.

Sleeping arrangements

  • Classic Double Double rooms have two double beds and are publicly listed for up to four guests, making them the obvious group-friendly choice.
  • Classic, Signature, Signature Deluxe and Signature Suite categories otherwise centre on one double or king bed.
  • Signature Deluxe adds a lounging sofa, but adult sofa-bed occupancy is not publicly confirmed, so don’t count it as an extra bed without checking.

Location

The Alan sits on Princess Street opposite Manchester Art Gallery, with Chinatown around the corner and St Peter’s Square just beyond it. From here, the Northern Quarter, Deansgate and central shopping streets are all walkable, while the tram network makes anything further out straightforward. Piccadilly station is also close enough for staggered arrivals without turning the group chat into a transport control centre.
