Judges Lodging is for the group that wants York to look like York. Georgian windows, old fireplaces, wonky historic-room energy and a courtyard that makes an early drink feel considerably more civilised than it has any right to.
The bedrooms are individually shaped by the building rather than stamped out from one template, which is charming until twelve people start comparing square footage. Some are genuinely spacious, with big bathrooms and even separate lounge areas; others are much more compact. This is one where room allocation matters.
Downstairs, the bar, restaurant and courtyard mean you can start slowly before heading out, while the location puts the Minster, Stonegate and The Shambles within a few minutes’ walk. It suits a smaller, slightly more grown-up hen particularly well — long lunch first, chaos optional.
Sleeping arrangements
- Bedrooms vary significantly in size and layout because this is a historic building rather than a purpose-built hotel.
- Some larger rooms have generous bathrooms and proper lounge areas with sofas and chairs, making them much better for getting ready.
- Do not assume every room will feel identical, and confirm any twin-bed requirements directly before booking.
Location
Judges Lodging sits on Lendal in the middle of York, a few minutes from the Minster, Stonegate and the city walls. The Shambles is easy on foot and York station is roughly seven to ten minutes away, which is about as useful as a group location gets. You can arrive, drop bags and forget transport for most of the weekend. The trade-off is that this is properly central, and courtyard-facing rooms can pick up more noise when the bar and outdoor areas are busy.

Check-in is from 3pm and check-out is by 11am. There is no onsite parking and the historic building does not have a lift. Room sizes vary significantly. If sleep matters, avoid assuming a courtyard room will be the quietest option: recent guest feedback specifically flags late noise in some courtyard-facing rooms.
